DISSECT, ANALYZE, REBUILD, IMPROVE

I love technology. I took apart my parents' broken TV when I was a kid, and put it back together which had somehow fixed it. From that point onward, I am in charge of most of the repairs in my house. Fast forward 20 years, I have finished studying at Simon Fraser University with a BA degree in Interactive Art and Technology, a faculty that focuses on User Experience Design. The school allowed me to get into a wide range of fields including but not limited to: virtual reality, 3d printing, 3d animation, video production, game design, and more. With these experiences, I started my first project on a successful Kickstarter campaign. I now co-founded two companies, launched a few products, and I hope to keep doing this in the future.

Previous works

  • Vulcan nixie watch

Teamed up with an electrical engineer and a software engineer, we have created a digital watch with vintage nixie tubes. We have successfully launched the project on Kickstarter and started a company.

  • Nyx VFD clock

Using VFD tubes to create a portable table clock kit. Inspired by sci-fi movies from the late 20th century, build with multiple options for customization, and experiment with the manufacturing process.

  • Zeus VFD watch concept art

Tasked to create a cyberpunk-themed digital watch with glowing digital displays, I have created concept sketches with 3d rendering to visualize the concept and make decisions early.

  • Pallas Cyberpunk phone case

The goal of this project is to create something within two weeks, put it on the market with very limited funding. I did the market research and analysis and this is the product we decided to proceed with.

  • ForkBomb Video game

Being a school project, our team decided to went with a small scope, which allowed us to have time to polish the final product. Compare to other projects in the class, our project stood out because it was much more refined.

Skillset

  • project management

Project management is something I had picked up working on different projects with different goals and resources. I have seen a few projects and working out the market and target audience, and using the resources we had to create a project that suits the situation. I had also worked with people that were not on our team to achieve the goals.

  • User experience

After all, that is what I went to University for. I spend time studying in different fields to learn skills centered around User Experience Design. Having worked on multiple projects and being the lead designer, I am in charge of working out all user experience problems during a project’s lifespan. this includes the user manual, social media management, video, website, and more.

  • rapid prototyping

Rapid prototyping is a communication skill. I used to think that sketching meant drawing with pen and paper. I now believe sketching is just a way to communicate with other people when language could not. I have sketched with 3d modeling software, photoshop, paper folding, clay modeling, 3d printing. With this skill, I can create a preview of the final product, and diagnostic issues and run user tests at the beginning of a product life cycle.

  • 3d Modeling

Experience working with Maya, Blender, Sketchup for photorealistic rendering. I am capable of creating photorealistic render by creating my own model or 3d scanning. i am also able to create my own texture, bump maps, and normal maps from scratch. I also have experience working with Solidworks, fusion 360 for 3d printing, create the technical drawings for manufactures to produce products.

  • videography

Capturing either photo or video, using a cellphone, DSLR, GoPro, or a Drone. Edit and color grade with blender, After Effects, or Premiere Pro. Sound design and edit with Audition. I enjoy making short videos and uses videos to show off my work or product.

  • Programming

Programming language to me is a tool to solve problems. I am in no shape to write an entire functional program then package and publish it, but I am able to create simple android Apps to capture GPS data then send it to my pebble watch app I wrote with C. I use processing to create a VI analysis tools to help me understand color on websites or packages.

  • Flexible

The experience I have in a wide arrange of fields, resulting in the ability to work on different aspects of a project. I am able to adapt to projects at different scales and paces. I can provide insights from multiple angles, and most importantly I can make design decisions early on with the experience I had.

  • team player

My University program didn’t have a lot of papers and tests, instead, we get a lot of team-based projects. I have become very used to work with a small team, even when I graduated and started working on my own project. I understand how to communicate feedback and ideas without insulting others on the team, and how to divide works and motivate teammates throughout a project.

  • language

I have spent the first 18 years of my life in the southern part of China, where people use a mix of Mandarin and Cantonese. I am now fluent in both of these languages. I have spent the next 12 years in Canada, and become fluent in English too due to the time I spend in University working on projects with people that come from different backgrounds.
