Nyx VFD table clock

Budget, budget, budget.

For this project, we have to be very budget-oriented since we are pulling the funding out of our own pockets. We wanted to test our ability to create a product with different types of manufacturing means and materials at a much lower cost. We decided to make clocks use of the VFD tube we had on hand, which is used in 90’s DVD players and sound systems.

Build your own

We decided to go with a sandwich frame construction and leave the assembly to the user. The cost of the clock was reduced significantly reduced because the clocks were not assembled. We leave that part to the user both as a cost-cutting measure and we want to bring the model building experience to bring the user closer to the product.

Light and smoke

We want to experiment with a futurist look and balance the hard edge of the lights with a softer environment. We build a small photography booth for this very reason and experimented with light bars and vape. We were able to achieve this fantastic look that is heavily inspired by Cyberpunk 2077 and Akira.

User experience

One of the most difficult parts of this project from the user experience standpoint is the assembly of the product. From our testing, this very touchpoint is where the user would have the most frustration, but also a part where we get to connect with our user. We decided to create the assembly guide that is inspired by IKEA’s assembly guide. We have tested our assembly guide and that has marginally improved the overall experience with the product.
